A Prospect School Adventure at the Andrew Simpson Centre

By Lisa Jones

On Tuesday, 6 March, Prospect School embarked on an enlightening journey to the Andrew Simpson Centre, courtesy of an invitation from the Portsmouth Sailing Trust. This unique careers day was not just an educational outing; it was a deep dive into the expansive and ever-evolving maritime sector, an industry on the cusp of significant growth and transformation.

The UK, with its rich maritime heritage, stands at the forefront of this industry, boasting over 1.1 million maritime professionals. The day’s sessions highlighted the sector’s anticipated expansion and the diverse career opportunities it presents, particularly within the Solent region, a hub of maritime activity employing tens of thousands and contributing significantly to the national economy. The revelation that a large majority of these roles are land-based offered our students a new perspective on maritime careers, challenging the stereotypical image of seafaring jobs and opening their minds to the myriad pathways available onshore.

Central to the day’s agenda was an engaging and inspirational session led by James Ward. James’s story, from his humble beginnings to becoming the leader of a top marine recruitment service, served as a powerful example of where ambition and perseverance can lead. His insights into the importance of body language, effective communication, and the pivotal role of first impressions in professional settings equipped our students with invaluable skills for their future career endeavours.

Perhaps the most dynamic element of the day was the speed networking event, which allowed our students to engage directly with professionals from over 15 leading companies in the maritime sector. This interaction was not only informative but also empowering, providing a platform for our students to ask questions, share their ideas, and envision themselves within the industry.

The feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive, with the Portsmouth Sailing Trust commending our students for their exemplary behaviour, professionalism, and enthusiasm. Their active engagement and insightful questions were a testament to their interest in and commitment to their futures.

This careers day at the Andrew Simpson Centre marked a significant milestone in our ongoing mission to broaden our students’ horizons and deepen their understanding of the opportunities that await them. The maritime industry, with its blend of tradition and innovation, offers a sea of possibilities for young minds eager to explore and excel.

As we set sail from the shores of the Andrew Simpson Centre, enriched with knowledge and inspired by the potential of the maritime sector, we look forward to the next adventure on our horizon. The TECH:TRUCK’s visit to Prospect School promises to steer our students towards the future, showcasing the latest in technology and engineering.

Stay tuned as we continue to navigate the vast landscape of career opportunities, fostering a spirit of discovery and ambition among our students.
