The Government is rolling out a new Emergency Alert programme

Emergency Alerts is a UK government service that will warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby. In an emergency, your mobile phone or tablet will receive an alert with advice about how to stay safe.

When is this starting?

The new Emergency Alert system is being tested on Sunday 23 April 2023.

Where can I find out more information?

You can find out more on the government’s website here: https://www.gov.uk/alerts

Can I opt out?

You can opt out from receiving the alerts by changing the settings on your device.  We have included the most common device settings at the end of this article.

Some national campaign groups are encouraging at risk groups to consider whether they want to opt out.  For example, this article from the West Midlands Policy & Crime Commissioner urges domestic abuse victims to consider how the alerts will affect them.

Opt Out iPhone:
  • To opt out, search your settings for ‘emergency alerts’ and turn off Severe alerts and Emergency alerts.
  • If this does not work, contact your device manufacturer.
  • For further advice go to gov.uk/alerts/opt-out.
Opt Out Android phones and tablets:
  • To opt out, search your settings for ‘emergency alerts’ and turn off Severe alerts and Emergency alerts.
  • On Huawei devices running EMUI 11 or older, search your settings for ‘emergency alerts’ and please turn off “Extreme threats”, “Severe threats” and “Show amber alerts”.
  • If this does not work, contact your device manufacturer.
